Say "No" To A Trump Presidency

Donald Trump has won the White House with 306 promised electoral votes; 270 are needed to win. But those electoral votes are cast by individuals who are not bound to vote for the candidate their state chose. They are permitted to abstain, or even to vote for another candidate.

This is the only option left for keeping Trump out of the White House.

It is a slim chance. A complete shot in the dark. But it's all we have.

Here's a list of those people. Email them. Tweet them. Tell them your stories. Ask them to consider abstaining or flipping their vote. Show them that a Trump presidency is NOT the will of the people. #flipthe37

Here's the list in spreadsheet form from @stevenportigal

  1. Love this! Could you take it down a notch? 'The Nuclear Option' is too reminiscent of the danger we're in with Trump's fingers on the codes. "Flip the 37" is a beautiful movement.

  2. Agreed. I think Flip the 37 is to the point

    1. Hi Gina. Glad you want to help! We've added some more instructions in the FAQ page, and soon we'll be posting a sample email that you can send. But you can tell the electors anything you feel is important! We encourage you to be civil and respectful in all your communications.

  4. I love the Master E-mail list, but is it possible that sending a message to so many at once might mark it as spam, thus sending it to their junk folders instead?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hmm not sure. We've heard from people who have gotten responses from some of the electors, but we don't know if they contacted them individually or as a group. If anyone finds out the answer to this, please let us know!

      Delete
    2. An email sent en masse will only be filtered out if someone has changed the settings in their email client.
A tip from a former legislative assistant: consider focussing your efforts on electors in your own state, as they wil be most likely t respond, and feel beholden to you as a voter.

      Delete
    3. It is probably best to email each one individually. I did it and it took a while. But a simple "copy & paste" method for the text body is sufficient.

      Delete
  5. We don't need FAITHLESS electors - we need Electors who will have FAITH - in US...WE THE PEOPLE. Hillary will receive over 2 million more votes than Trump. The third, maybe even the second highest vote total EVER!

Trump has not released his taxes, his medical records/history, he has over 250 business subsidiaries in Russia - where is his allegiance? His university and company are under investigation for fraud and have over 5400 lawsuits against it! He has sexual assault and rape charges against him!

We need electors to have and exercise FAITH in US, WE THE PEOPLE, because WE THE PEOPLE have spoken and our voices and votes are still being counted, and already our voices are saying, IN THE MAJORITY, that we prefer Hillary Rodham Clinton for President.

Millions of people have signed a petition and millions more will by December 19th when you cast your vote. Already 100's of thousands of people have taken to the streets to protest peacefully to express our unease and lack of FAITH in Trump and in the outcome and we demand the Electoral College and the electors become relevant by finally doing what's right by our country and not their party. Please, for the sake of our nation, do not quietly go into the night and do nothing.

  6. My Christian family, normally split, came together against Trump. Please, save America. That's why we have electors!!

  7. thank you, thank you, thank you

  8. Please keep urging these electors, people. Trump MUST be stopped. The hate crimes are just going to continue and get worse and worse.

    1. Trump just hired Stephen Bannon to be his chief strategist. He used to run Breitbart news, which is a very disturbing website. He isn't in the White House yet and he is already making poor decisions. Encourage your friends and family members to write to these electors!

      Delete
  9. Might efforts be best concentrated in Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Georgia? Those states have a high number of electoral votes and had incredibly close vote tallies that in all reality should be recounted/might have gone for Hillary, adding yet another reason for the electors to cast their votes for her -- along with doing the right thing and saving the nation/world, of course.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Arizona, Pennsylvania and Georgia are also states that do not have any laws that bind the votes of presidential electors. So, yes, I think it is a good idea to focus on these three states. The electors from these states might actually be more receptive to letters/emails from us as opposed to electors from other states where there are rules/fines about being a faithless elector.

      Delete
    2. Those are great places to focus. We wanted to include as much information as possible so that people could decide who they wanted to contact, but it's definitely a good idea to put in the most energy where it will make the most impact.

      Delete
    3. I disagree. Potential flippers may be in any RED state. Ohio is happy hunting ground since most electors were strong supporters of Ohio Governor Kaisich. Don't neglect any state. Ohio has "bound" electors, but bound electors may be persuaded to flip with an appeal to patriotism and the founder's original purpose of the electoral college--to prevent unqualified people from becoming POTUS. If that is more important than a $1000 fine, we should see some "flips" in states that bind their electors.

  11. Just curious where this list came from, I was seeing another list online that differs from the elector list here. http://www.politico.com/story/2016/11/list-who-will-cast-a-formal-vote-for-president-2016-231235 ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That was the list we used, though there were a few discrepancies that we researched. Our list and the Politico list shouldn't be significantly different.

      Delete
  12. Do you have any idea how many people are sending emails? I got a response from a couple electors who are throwing up straw man arguments against my email. One of them even said it was illegal to ask someone to perform an illegal act (cast a faithless vote) in Michigan and that he was reporting me to somebody. Not that I care or even think he's going to do this, but I just wanted to let you know that people who send emails may get whacky responses. It may help if you have a testimonials page on this website so that people who want to send emails get social support for what may happen as a result of them clicking that button on their mass email!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I also saw on Twitter that people were receiving very abrasive responses from certain electors. I wonder if it is best to write anonymously to those who represent states that have laws binding the votes of the presidential electors. That list can be found here: http://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/the-electoral-college.aspx#nomination

      Delete
    2. Yes, we've heard from several people about that particular Michigan elector. We've removed his contact information, even though there is absolutely nothing illegal about sending a polite email to a government representative. He's just bluffing.

      Delete
    3. We may be able to get around the violation of any laws by simply stating specific concerns with the candidate and the appointments to high ranking positions in the White House as well as a description, as we understand it, of the electoral college as part of our checks and balances whose duty it is to prevent an autocratic demagogue from seizing power, to safeguard our government and the American people, and prevent a poorly qualified person from entering the highest office in the land.
Then, I would say "Please consider these points and confirm or properly dismiss them before voting according to the law and the Constitution of the United States of America."
That would not be asking for any illegal action.

      Delete
    4. Alice,

Please send that email conversation with the Elector to the ACLU. It's hard to say without seeing it but it smells a bit of blackmail and it should not be legal for people acting in a government position to threaten people that express an opinion respectfully.

      Delete
  13. What would you suggest we write to urge them? Id like to write them but I want to ensure it's correct and sufficiently convincing.

    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Nicole. We've added a link to a sample letter at the top of our page. Thanks for your help!

      Delete
    2. I suggest that letter writers do some research about the elector they are addressing. Google their name to find newspaper articles about them. Look for their website and read their biography, and other information about them. The more information you know, the better. For example, one elector I found is obviously very focused on "pro-life" concerns. She is not a person who should receive a letter that mentions the possible shift on the Supreme Court. I've found several electors who have been active in civil rights issues. When that is the case, that can be part of your appeal. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH. Also, be polite and respectful in your letters. Invite electors to "vote their conscience", to put the welfare of the country above party. It is probably not best to tell them WHO they should vote for. Getting rid of Donald Trump is the priority. Any republican will be better than DJT/Pence.

      Delete
    3. This is a great idea. The more a letter/email is catered to that specific elector, the better. It is definitely more time consuming to write one like that, but it might be worth the effort. I was thinking of putting together a master list of the electors with their personal top concerns and emailing it to the person who runs this website. Hopefully I can get that done in the next couple of days.

  14. This guy might buckle under pressure -
"South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard, one of the state’s three electors, called on Trump to quit the GOP ticket after a tape of Trump bragging about groping women was released. But a spokesman noted that he still intends to back Trump in the Electoral College if Trump wins South Dakota."

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Matt Michels, who is also an elector in S Dakota has also expressed his issues with Trump in the past. He Tweeted last month: Time is NOW! Trump must step aside for Pence...for our party and country.

There is no state law in South Dakota restricting an elector to vote along with the popular vote. It's possible these men could be swayed. A lot could happen between now and when they cast their votes in December.

  22. Would it be a good idea to maybe suggest an alternate candidate for them to vote for instead? Since they're Republicans, I doubt they would want to change their vote to Hillary, but even if enough people abstained, it would still only be a choice between her and Trump unless a third person gets written in somewhere. And I seriously doubt the current House would pick her over him.

His policies are very conservative, but at least he has common sense and good ethics. However, I think electors should be encouraged to "vote their conscience". John is a close friend of Jeb Bush. As most people know, Trump really attacked "low energy" Jeb during the primary. I doubt Browning cares for Trump very much. Browning is obviously a party-man, but I think there is a chance for a flip.

  27. I feel like there has been legitimate fraud at local levels at the division of election offices; in my town...jacksonville, duval county, and would suspect it in every swing state, county. our division of election send 4300 voters to the wrong location; no reason for it, announced only the night before the election and said someone would be there to re-direct them on election. the spokesperson at the division said it was just one problem and no others, but myself ad others exit polled in other locations and around jacksonville and all saw a good number of people going in to vote and coming back out saying they had changed their polling locations without notifying them. people going to work or voting on lunch hours WERE disenfranchised in jacksonville. Who is checking on it? I read that fraud is l/3 of the decision making process. Google 4300 voters sent to wrong polling places in jacksonville, fl it was in the mandarin. the div said both locations that the people were sent to had changed hands, so I went to check and the property they sent them to, the 4300 voters had changed hands on march 28th, 2016 and the other address had not changed hands yet. What possible reason was there for this mix-up?? none!! voter fraud...and I am inclinded to think it happened in other swing states and appropriate counties and someone needs to do the research!!

  36. Thank you so much for organizing this site! And everyone for their comments, especially the ones about individual electors and their background!

I changed the suggested letter a little - if anyone would like to see it or use some of my changes in their letter, here it is (still very generic - may change a little for each elector if I have time and info):

    Dear [Elector],

Thank you for your service to this country! Our founding fathers and we, the people, have entrusted you with the grave responsibility to cast your vote, after due deliberation, according to the vote of the people in your state and your assessment of the qualities of our presidential candidates, after having observed them during three debates and numerous appearances in public on the campaign trail. With a heavy heart and much concern, I must ask you to consider to decline to cast your electoral vote for Donald Trump.

It is my sincere hope that you are able and willing to show the courage and determination required in extraordinary circumstances to vote your conscience and put the welfare of our country above party affiliations, peer pressures, and the short-term path of least resistance.

Over the course of this election campaign Mr. Trump has proven himself to be unfit for the role of commander-in-chief by displaying disregard not only for multiple groups of Americans, but for our cherished beliefs and traditions, for the United States Constitution, and for our country itself.

His volatile temperament, his lack of experience and ethics, and his bigotry are not qualities that we want representing us to the rest of the world. I am deeply concerned about his appointment of Stephen Bannon as chief strategist in the White House. I do not believe that Mr. Trump or the cabinet he would appoint represents the views of the majority of the American people, regardless of political affiliation. Additionally, he lost the popular vote by the most significant margin in history.

Please consider casting your vote for another candidate, or abstaining from voting entirely. This is an extraordinary presidential race for which our forefathers have wisely prepared by giving you the power to avert a disastrous appointment for the leader of our nation.

Thank you for your kind consideration!

    Respectfully,

  37. I think you have to put yourself in the position of the electors and ask what would motivate them to change their vote? They have taken an oath to their parties. They aren't going to put themselves at risk (in these violent times) just because they don't like The Donald. You have to make sure they realize what will happen to their state if Donald's 100 day plan is enacted. He has vowed to cut off all Federal funding to "Sancuary Cities". There are over 300 Sancuary cities. For example, Miami is one. If you are a Florida elector & start to realize what it would mean to the people if all Federal Funding to Miami (and all the other FL SC) was stopped, It may give you pause (esp if you are an official there). What would really happen if every illegal in Florida was rounded up? Crops won't get picked, landlords will have a bunch of empty apartments, fewer people buying food, etc. The whole economy would suffer.
Look for & inform them of all the real impacts....beyond the rhetoric.

  38. Teresa Richards response was:

If you are emailing me in an attempt to influence me to cast my electoral votes for anyone other than Donald Trump and Mike Pence for President and Vice President, I can assure you that you are wasting your time. Your message was marked as trash and archived, without me ever reading it, and this AUTORESPONSE was sent in reply.

There are a few things you should understand:

First, electors in Wyoming are bound by state statutes to cast their votes for the persons chosen by the electorate in the general election. I could not change my vote, even if I wanted to. In fact, it is also illegal in this state to encourage someone to violate the law, which you are attempting to do.

Second, the people of Wyoming put their faith in me to represent them in the electoral college, and even if I wasn't bound by state laws, I wouldn't disrespect or dishonor the faith they put in me when they overwhelmingly voted for Donald Trump and Mike Pence in the general election. In fact, over 68% of Wyoming's voters cast their ballots for Donald Trump and Mike Pence. I wouldn't even think about going against their wishes, and then facing them when I got home.

Third, I believe in the Electoral College, and the states' rights that it protects. I do not agree that Clinton won the "popular vote" because there was no national popular election. There were 51 distinct constitutionally authorized elections held in the United States, and President Elect Trump won in enough of them to secure the electoral votes necessary to secure his election.

Finally, I believe Donald Trump and Mike Pence are the right choice to lead America for the next 8 years, and all of the political maneuvering, out-of-context quotes, and fear-mongering by people who do not accept the results of a legal, constitutionally guided election, will do nothing to change my mind.

I am a proud Republican, who believes in a limited federal government, individual liberty, states rights, and a free market, and I will cast my electoral votes for Donald Trump and Mike Pence with pleasure on December 19.

    Sincerely,

  40. There is NO precedent for this but Given the literally thousands of reports of voter fraud and suppression, the acknowledged contact of Russian with Trump Campaign, The Wrong and possibly illegal interference by Comey 10 days before the election and even the release of private emails by a pro Russian Wikileaks I want to at LEAST see the DNC petition SCOTUS to nullify the election and order a new one before Jan 20th for ALL Federal representatives voted on November 8, 2016 . Just because there is no precedent does not mean that there is no basis to make law this way. Further Following the Hamilton Reasoning of using the Electoral College we need to call upon all patriots who will put Country above Party to NOT vote for Trump.. they can vote for ANYONE.. but not trump. It is possible some might vote Clinton.. but we must make sure Trump is never residing in the White house as president or guest EVER ... we only need some of the Reps from Michigan, Pennsylvania,Minnesota, Florida and Pennsylvania to start this and possibly a few from Texas and Arizona to break from their state EVERY Democrat in the Electoral College that is in a trump won state must vote COUNTRY over Party . Id BOTH these things were done simultaneously we might have a change to survive as a country.. but the DNC has to grow a backbone and not just let this be... I need a change of direction from this pending catastrophe.

  41. There has been no major effort to oust an "unfit" person from the presidency as Hamilton anticipated. This is indeed unprecedented. But it is certainly called for in this circumstance. I won't list all the reasons Donald Trump is unfit; but I will say that many good republicans can see some of these reasons too. Donald Trump is hardly a conservative, or a republican. Electors need to be reminded of their constitutional duty to vote their conscience. Even if we don't find 39 or more republican electors who will become "unfaithful electors", if we find 10 or 12, that would be an historic event. I say let's make some history. Do your research, find those sensible, republican electors, graciously and politely contact them, and FLIP them.

  52. Three things:

    1) The states to hit are Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and West Virginia. None of them require their electors to pledge to vote a certain way.

    2) There is a lot of animosity out there towards Clinton, rightly or wrongly. For this reason, I think a better strategy is to ask electors to simply vote for someone other than Trump. Let them pick who. If 21 Republican electors change their votes, Trump will no longer have enough electoral votes to become president, Congress will have to choose a president, and whoever they pick must surely be better than Trump.

    3) Electors with public email addresses are getting bombarded. This could annoy them and make them more determined to vote for Trump. I think we should send snail mail to other electors. Perhaps we could divide up the list among ourselves. It's a huge list after all. Why duplicate the work?

I've found a number of snail-mail addresses and can post them here if people are interested.

  53. also this:
Below is the response I have been sending to the several emails received, such as yours.

Boy have you got the process wrong. Not surprising.

Each Elector was elected to represent thousands of citizens. This vote is not their "personal opinion". Electors will do their duty and act to complete the decision process which began on November 8 in the General Election.

Nice try though to get Electors to place their personal opinion above the will of the people.

Please note that, in my state, Elector voting is regulated by state law (i.e, Electors are bound by state law in regards to how each will vote).

Also in my state, encouraging someone to violate a law is a CRIME. Since you are encouraging me to violate a state law, I have turned your email request over to the proper legal authorities for their handling as to a legal disposition.

    Good luck with that.

How is having an elector who's clearly a part of the Donald Trump team not a conflict of interest?

    ReplyDelete
  74. I received the following response from Bill Conley from SC. I don't understand this "we're not allowed" stuff coming from those in certain states. No one has ever been prosecuted for being a faithless elector and Alexander Hamilton in the Federalist Papers expressly states the right to vote your conscience.

Founding Fathers wanted to make sure highly states didn't have total control of the election. We have proven their point. If not for Electoral College, candidates would only visit large cities and the rest of the country would have no say.
No, I am required by my pledge to uphold the voter's desires, which means more than your personal request. If we went that route, why have an election. The electoral college was put in place to keep areas with large populations from controlling the election. The people have spoken, whether or not you like it, and that vote should stand.
As for Mr. Trump not being qualified, as some claim, we will just have to agree to disagree.

    Perfect practice makes perfect performance.
